SECOND MILESTONE - THE SQUALE 1521
1 - The origins of the 1521 model
The first model of the iconic 1521 collection was introduced in the mid-70s when Squale set out to create an extremely high-performing watch with smaller dimensions to keep up with the times.
Using the Squale Master as a starting point, Charles Von Büren re-designed the case with a decidedly reduced thickness and a pressure resistance of up to 50 atmospheres.
2 - the first 1521
The first 1521 model immediately became a point of reference for underwater watchmaking due to its small dimensions which made the watch more versatile.
The case was essentially the same as the Master’s, with the exception of the thickness which, in the case of the 1521, was approximately 12 millimetres.
A fundamental element that allowed the creation of a thinner model was the flat mineral glass, which had been already tested on the Squale Master.
The construction of the bezel was also the same, i.e. a spring system that made them monodirectional with 60 clicks, allowing divers to keep track of the time spent diving.
The first colored inserts, initially made of Bakelite and later of aluminium, featured a triangle at twelve o'clock with tritium. This was the luminescent material par excellence in the last century as it guaranteed perfect and long-lasting brightness.
The 1521 dials differed from the Squale Master’s in that they featured printed indexes, a technique that allowed the maximum quantity of luminescent material to be applied obtaining perfect night-time luminosity.
3 - The new production and technical innovations
In the 2000s, there was a succession of continuous innovations, always aimed at seeking product perfection.
Among the various innovations, the main ones concerned the bezel: over the years the bezel went from having 60 clicks to 120 to improve precision.
Another remarkable innovation was the introduction of four screws that allow the bezel to be easily removed from the case, an important feature when it came to replacements and repairs.
Also in these years, some models were made with the "Squale" engraving on the left side of the case, a feature that would accompany the 1521 model for several years, before being abandoned.
4 - Contemporary production
The 1521 model is Squale's most iconic, recognizable and requested model to date.
The collection has evolved and expanded considerably, experimenting especially on the dials with different combinations of colours, finishes and workmanship.
The Onda models, a tribute to the sea, feature embossed dials depicting the waves of the sea, then came the SuperLuminova dials of the Full Luminous models, and the captivating “degradee” models, which feature gradients of the same colour on the dial.
Among the latest additions to the collection, the most important are certainly the 1521 Classic COSC and 1521 Ocean COSC models, which, for the first time in Squale's history, are equipped with a movement certified by the esteemed Swiss institute
5 - THE FUTURE
In the year of its 65th anniversary, in which the iconic Von Buren case with the crown at 4 o'clock is celebrated, Squale aims to make its 1521 model ever more iconic.
The research and development carried out on this model aims to make this watch even more complete, with the aim of filling in any perceived gaps.
After years of research and development seeking to imbue style and functionality to Squale’s classic designs, we are proud to present the steel bracelet for the 1521 collection. The design of this remarkable addition to our iconic series took time and numerous tests in order to best satisfy current and future 1521 owners.
6 - MARINA MILITARE
In 2024, the year of its 65th anniversary, Squale, together with the Italian Navy, decided to honor their long history of collaborations with a special limited edition of 500 pieces worldwide. The current 1521 Marina Militare is designed to be the most elegant among the 1521 models, highlighting its qualities as a celebratory watch. The 316L stainless steel case has a brushed finish with polished bevels, while the black dial features a brushed finish, creating unique plays of light thanks to the applied polished steel indices.
